HISTORY LIBERIA - AFRICAN OLDEST DEMOCRACY


Liberia referred as African oldest democracy, was founded in 1822 by united state of America president James Momoe as a safe haven for emancipated slaves. The capital of Liberia is Monrovia. There are about 16 ethnic dialects spoken in Liberia, their national language is English, Liberia had an internal armed conflict, which spanned several years. Liberia had the most bloodiest war from 1989 to 1996. The Taylor’s national patriotic front (NPF). The state of the war marked the end to about ten years of dictatorial military rule by Samuel. K. Deo who was
killed by a warring faction led by prince Johnson. This period was marked with widespread atrocities the conflict and human, rights violation. At the end of the conflict, Charles Taylor a formal war lord was elected president of the republic of Liberia. Presently, the formal president Charles Taylor is being trial for war crimes and crime against humility by special court for Sierra Leone with his trial being conducted in the Hague Amsterdam.

Liberia instituted a truth and reconciliation commission (TRC) to deal with past atrocities.
Liberia became an independence state in 1847. President Momoe repatriated descendant of Africa slaves who had the willingness to return to Africa.
April 1980 Samuel Deo a member of the army, launched Military coup and took power in 1989, the national patriotic front (NPS) led by prince Johnson.
In 1997 Charles Taylor emerged as winner in an election held. In August 2003 he resigned and went into exile in Nigeria.
In October 2008 election was held that brought Ellen Johnson Snleaf into limelight as African first woman president.
Circuit Court: Circuit Court has Original Jurisdiction in the most serious cases including aggravated assault, burglary rape and wonder.
