GHANA INDEPENDENCE, GOVERNMENT AND POLITICAL PARTIES


All the british colonized countries territories were always divided into:
-         Region
-         Protectorate
-         Province
-         Town
-         Rural Area and the political structure or organization of British government are:
1.      Governor general who is always in control.

2.      In legislative council you have unofficial members and official members that play a legislative role.
3.      The Executives, who play an advisory role to Governor General.
Election is always from province to legislative, unofficial is increased when the Africans agitates for constitutional reform. The British at a stage choose to work with the Chief outside the educated Africans to represent Africans in the executive council composed of the Governor and British officials only. Under this condition, the educated African realized that they were not given the desired opportunity to take part in their government.

REPRESENTATIVE GOVERNMENT

The majority of Africans are to occupy the legislative council and the elected member are to be increased there are also an increase of African’s in the Administration both at the legislative and Executive. That is when political parties will start springing up like in Ghana, in August 1947 united Gold coast Convention (U.G.C.C) was formed, and for any political party to be formed means the leader are not comfortable with the present Leadership. The leaders of (U.G.C.C) are
1.      Dr. Kwame Nkuruma
2.      Dr. Danguah and four others because of 1948 riots this leaders of UGCC were arrested and detained.

PERIOD OF INTERNAL SELF-GOVERNMENT
In this period, the first election was conducted Dr. Kwame Nkuruma’s party won by 34 out of 38 seat convention peoples party) (CCP) the Governor Federal called upon Dr. Nkuruma to form the government in 1951 then in 1952 Dr. Nkuruma was given the little of Prime Minister, it was a little because no constitution to back the position in 1954 after election in all the position, parliamentary government was formed though the British Governor general was still there with his power. The last constitution is called Nkuruma’s constitution 

COMPLETE INDEPENDENCE
Ghana got her independence in March 6th 1957 and became Republic in 1960 where the queen was no longer the Head of state and no Governor general. The President becomes the head of state with his ministers selected by him.

POLITICAL PARTIES IN GHANA AND LEADERS USED TO ACHIEVE INDEPENDENCE

(1)     The united Gold coast convention (UGCC) was established in 1947. The Party was led by Dr. Danguah and Late Mr Georgy Grant and Nkuruma’s party (CPP) was formed led by Dr. Nkuruma this party was formed because of the disagreement in UGCC party policy. The leaders are Dr. Nkuruma Botsio and Gbedema, Ghana remains one party state until February 24th 1947 aim
(2)     In 1949 convention peopleuary 24 1966 when coup d’etal was staged immediately CPP was banned

(3)     National Alliance of Liberals (NAL) led by Mr. Komia A. Cibedemah
(4)     Progress party CPP by Dr. Kofi A. Busia
(5)     United nationalist party (CNP) by Dr. AS Banner man
(6)     All people Republican party (APRP) by E.V.C de Grant Johnson.
(7)     People action party (PAP) by Ayarn Imoru

Sierra Leone people’s party (SLPP) was formed in 1951 led by late Dr. Milton A.S Margai and Magai became the Chief Minister.
