THE REPRODUCTIVE HEALTH STRATEGY

Aim - The strategy is aimed at strengthening the capacity of the countries to give their people reproductive health care by providing them with the information, supportive environment and health services that they need in order to have healthy sexual relationships, achieve their objectives with regard to childbearing and free themselves from reproductive tract illnesses and diseases.

Guiding principles - The effectiveness and sustainability of national reproductive health strategies will be enhanced by the following overriding principles
·        National ownership and country leadership;
·        Gender-sensitivity of programmes;
·        Effective partnerships among the key actors, including the informal and private sector
·        Participation in the development of a basic and comprehensive package of services;
·        Good governance, peace and security;
·        Ethical considerations and culture-sensitivity:

Programmatic areas - Based on the epidemiological burden of reproductive illnesses, the following thrusts have been identified, namely, safe motherhood, perinatal and newborn care; adolescent sexual and reproductive health; prevention of unwanted pregnancies; control of sexually transmitted infections and HIV/AIDS; prevention, early detection and early management of cancer of the cervix, reduction of female genital mutilation: and reduction of domestic and sexual violence. Other programmatic areas can be added according to national need to take into account the effects of the epidemic.
The following objectives and targets have been set for the above thrusts for the period 1998-2007.
