Country Ambassadors here present, our
most learned NISSMUN Faculty Adviser, NISSMUN Staff, Honorable members of the Secretariat,
Fellow distinguished delegates, Men and Women of the Press, every other
dignitary here present, ladies and gentlemen.
I lack the eloquence of diction, the
expression of metaphor cum the condensed language of poetry to express my
profound gratitude before this esteemed gathering of social and political
luminaries, scholars and diplomats of international repute, ,men and women of
transcendental learning of the highest intelligentsia of noble academia who
have acquired to themselves the best of knowledge of every discipline. Unbehalf
of the NISSMNU secretariat, I appreciate you all for all the individual
sacrifices borne towards the success attained so far in the past days of this
year’s conference.
We are here gathered to continue
diplomatic deliberations on the theme of this year’s conference: The Millennium Development Goals; reminding
our leaders of the 2015 Deadline. This theme no doubt is an issue of global
monumental importance.
The need to attain to global
developmental and humanitarian challenges to make the earth a better living
place necessitated the September 2000 “Millennium
Summit”; the greatest assembly of world leaders in history. At the end of
the meeting, from the Millennium Declaration, the MDG’S were drafted, adopted by 189 countries and signed by 147 head
of States and Governments.
The MDG’s are 8 in number with 21 targets
aimed at spurring development by improving social and economic conditions in
the world poorest countries. The MDG’s numerically range from:
Eradicate extreme hunger and poverty
Achieve Universal Primary Education
Promote Gender equality and empower women
Combat Child Mortality
Promote Maternal Health
Compact HIV/Aids, Malaria and other related Diseases
Ensure environmental Sustainability, and
Develop a Global Partnership for Development. These
goals are presumably to be attained by 2015.
So far, success on global implementation
of the MDG’s has been uneven. Some countries have recorded success on these
goals while others are yet to realize any. Statistics have shown that much
success on the MDG’s has been recorded in Asian countries like China and India
respectively where poverty rate and infant mortality has reduced. On the other
hand, little success could be said to have been attained in sub-Sahara African
countries where country governments have been bedeviled by corruption, and pathetic
conditions like extreme poverty, abuse of fundamental human right, bridge on
rule of law, etc All these made government of these countries unable to attain
MDG’s. The leaders of these countries also blame their negligent and slow
implementation of the MDG’s on the Global financial crisis.
They shouldn’t forget that 2015 is
near and that the world is greater than the sum of their selfish individual
expectations.
A look at the 8 MDG’s reveal bluntly
that much is yet to be done at every angle. Following the MDG’s numerically. In the “Giant of Africa”, people still live
below one dollar per day in line with global food insecurity which has created
abject poverty. To be educated nowadays, one pays through the nose. Research
has shown that 46.3 million people in the country are illiterates. Gender
equality is not practiced as women are never given social or political chances
in the society.
Child mortality is on the increase.
Maternal mortality has since been overlooked by tiers of government and hence the
increasing number of women who die at child delivery. Cases of HIV/AIDs,
Malaria, and other related diseases are far from reduction. The environment is
increasingly becoming harsh for habitation as industrial combustions have
depleted the ozone layer exposing the modern Homo sapiens to the threat of global
warning and climate change. Global partnership over the years has dwindled as
there is increase in country and inter-countries conflicts. The Israel Gaza and
Pakistan crisis, Darfur crisis, Iraq and Iran crisis attests to this.
From my sense of rational reasoning,
I do pause to paunder “Where are we heading to? With the planet in peril. 2015
is fast approaching and the MDG deadline is drawing nearer. This, our leaders
shouldn’t forget. The time to act is too short; we should unanimously with our
country leaders cease this historic moment to act responsibly and collectively
for our general and future generation welfare.
The time to act is now. We mustn’t
wait till 2015 to avoid people around the world preferring extinction to being
alive. Support the MDG’s today. May the blessings of peace and freedom be upon
us all.
