PRIMARY HEALTH CARE SYSTEM IN NIGERIA



Consequent upon the PHC needs to the Nigeria economic growth and the development of the health care delivery in particular. Ekunwe 1996 had appointed out that PHC is central to Nigeria’s national health care system and was adopted as the key to health for all Nigerians.
            The basic principles of PHC in Nigeria therefore include:-
a.         Accessibility of health services to all population.

b.         Maximum individuals and community involvement in the planning and operation of health care service.
c.         The integration of health development with total overall social and economic development. The prominent features of PHC programme in the country are:
1.         PHC addresses the main community health problems as well as provides promotive, curative and rehabilitate services.
2.         PHC is based on the application of relevant results of health services research and public health experiences.
3.         PHC reflects and evolves from socio cultural and political characteristics of the country as well as the economic conditions of the citizen.
4.         PHC promotes maximum community and individual participation and self-reliance.
5.         PHC embraces and involves all health and health-related sections and aspects of community and national development, namely:
i.          Agriculture
ii.         Housing
iii.       Education
iv         Public works
v.         Communication
vi.        Animal husbandry and
vii.      Food production.
