ABSTRACT
Pre-eclampsia is a challenge to midwifery practice.
It is a serious condition in which hypertension, Oedema and Proteinuria
develops in the last (3rd) trimester of pregnancy. Prepeclampis is
one of the condition in pregnancy that seeks for urgent intervention. The
objective of this study is to find out the major cause(s) of pre-eclampsia, the
signs and symptom of the disease and prognosis and complication of the disease
and the possible management of the disease.
This seminar contains an
introduction of pre-clampsia, the causes of pre-eclampsia, the pathophysiology,
the diagnosis and differential diagnosis, the treatment and prevention of
pre-eclampsia as well as its complication. It also contains the role of midwife
in the care of a woman with pre-edampsia. The writer recommends further studies
into the cause of pre-eclampsia as the major cause of pre-eclampsia according
to some schools of thought is still
unknown and also more studies should be done on the best treatment regimen to
be used in the care of a pre-eclamptic patient. And also proper awareness
should be created especially in the rural areas on the signs and symptoms of
pre-eclampsia in pregnancy.
