PERFORMANCE IN SECONDARY SCHOOL WITH
REFERENCE TO EBONYI LOCAL GOVERNMENT AREA EBONYI STATE.
ABSTRACT
The title of this research work in the effect of
social studies instructional material on students performance in secondary
school with reference to Ebonyi Local Government Area Ebonyi State. The subject
of the study was the Junior students selected randomly from secondary schools
Ebonyi in Urban. Data collected from the test scores of the students after the
teaching-learning situations using instructional materials and without the use
of instructional materials in teaching process. However, in the area of
research findings, the researcher discovered that on comparism of the academic
performance of students taught with the use of instructional materials and that
group taught with the of instructional materials and that group taught without
the use of instructional materials, the group taught withy the use of
instructional materials and that group taught without the use of instructional
materials performed better than the latter group. The researcher also found
out, that the use of instructional materials in teaching-learning process
arouse students interest. The researcher recommended that the teachers should
develop positive attitude towards the use of instructional materials in their
lesson. In conclusion the effects of the use of instructional materials on
student performance cannot be ignored.

Statement of the Research Problem
Instructional material cannot be over-emphasis in the
teaching of social studies. Because it is very important to ensure proper
understanding. Every average educated minded individual in Nigeria is aware of
the falling standard of education, lack of academic optimist on the side of the
students and teachers, poor academic performance unlike what was obtained in
the past.
As a result of this development, this study is
preoccupied with determining whether or not students’ performance in the
classroom subjects is enhanced when oral instruction and students’ involvement
are complemented by effective use of instructional materials.

METHODOLOGY
Restatement of the Research Purpose
The purpose of the study was to investigate the effect
of instructional materials in the teaching of social studies in secondary
schools in Ebonyi municipal council.
Research Methodology and Design
Two instructional models were design and applied for
the purpose of this experiment. The first is the orthodox instructional model
(O.I.M) with this model, no instructional was used. The teacher was the focal
point and the dominating figure during the lesson, while, the students were at
the receiving end. In other words, the teachers personally was imposed on
students throughout the lesson.
The second model is the
instructional material model (I.M.M). Here adequate use of instructional material was made during the course of the
lesson. Instructional materials designed to illustrate information clearly are
of two groups. The first is of general nature and includes.

Discussion
The set out objectives of this work were
undertaken to search for the effects of social studies instructional materials
on students’ performance in teaching learning situations in secondary schools.
Poor performance of students in variety of subjects in senior secondary
Certificate examination results necessitated the study.
However, base on data available to us, the effects of
instructional materials on the students performance cannot be undervalued.
Instructional materials stimulate and help further study, help children to take
active interest in the topic presented, it does have emotional impact on the
children and affect their attitude towards what are portrayed.
The effective use of social studies instructional
materials or devices or techniques help the classroom teacher to pass the
intended message effectively and meaningfully to the students, so that, the
learners receives, understand, retain.
