This is a satisfactory method in which the refuse is
placed in a designated area and covered with a layer of earth. When a level
ground is used, sanitary filling is done in
trenches 2-3m deep and
3-m deep and 2-10m wide.
When naturally occurring depressions, excavations and pits are to be
filled up, this can be done by tipping te refuse into them in th e form of
alternate layers of refuse and earth.
A 30cm
layers of earth is adeqauate
between two layers of refuse.
Sanitary filling of low
lying places is a useful method of
reclaiming such land for
building, playgrounds, gardens and
agricultural farms. The process of sanitary filling is much facilitated by the use of bulldozers.
Physical, chemical and bacteriological
changes occurring within the buried mass of refuse render it innocuous
with 4-6
, months after the decomposition
of organic matter is complete. MC. Gupta (20050. landfill is a probably the most common method of domestic waste disposal.
