CONSTRAINTS IN PRODUCTION OF MAGGOT

The following are the constraints of fish feed production using maggot
i)                    Water logging of substrate during rains hinders the production of maggot.
ii)                  Harmattan or dry air dries the substrate faster.
iii)                Direct sunlight on substrate hinders the production of maggot.
iv)                Ants (soldier ants) most times take over the substrates.

SOLUTION
i)                    Cover the open sided walls with bamboo mats or dark colored plastic sheets well arranged
for ventilation.
ii)                  Maintain water regularly in the canal to prevent ants from having access to the substrate.
iii)                During harmattan, water the substrates frequently. Turn substrates after every harvest.
iv)                Inspect and repair cracks inside the building.
v)                  Set traps to prevent birds from having access to the substrates.
The operator must be vigilance enough to harvest the maggots earlier before they could pass to the next stage.
