Data collections of congenital malformations were
obtained from the records office and the delivery registers of maternity units
of Federal medical center Abakaliki and Ebonyi State University Teaching
Hospital (Nigeria).
The
materials include, the hospital files containing incidence where congenital
malformations were recorded, the yearly birth containing the number of children
born each year and monthly records ,containing the number of children born
every months in various words of the hospital.
The total number of births including children
born with or without anomalies and confirmed after inspection by doctors,
midwives or attendant present at time of delivery was obtained so that the
percentage of malformations can be assessed as well as the incidence rate.
The number of children born and weights below
2.5kg was also obtained and constituted low birth weight babies.
The number of malformations obtained was
grouped systematically so that the individual congenital malformations can be
determined progressively within the craniofacial, in relation to the total
number of malformations.
Nurses and midwives were also
interviewed.
