DESPO ESTABLISHMENT, VISION & STATUS
The Act Establishing The School:
Delta State Polytechnic, Otefe-Oghara was established through a bill that was signed into law by Governor James Onanefe Ibori in November 2002. This is the result of a partnership between the Delta State Ministry of Education and Westminster University, London. The partnership gave birth to the Delta State Higher Education Project (DSHEP). Located in the agricultural town of Otefe in Ethiope West Local Government Area of Delta State.Vision Statement:
Delta State Polytechnic, Otefe-Oghara is a manifestation of an excellently conceptualized and articulated vision delivered for the benefit of humanity for entrepreneurial acquisition and advancement. The motto of technology for entrepreneurship underscores the fact of talent and technology skills advancement as tool for critical wealth creation.
It therefore explains the role of entrepreneurial and technological skills in creating the abilities, courage, capabilities and managerial competences necessary for economic growth and wealth creation within and beyond Delta State. The mandate of the Polytechnic is to train and empower graduates who will be highly successful professionals armed with all the sufficient skills that are critical to the work place of the 21st century.
- The aim is to achieve the status of excellence in computing and information technology {I.T}.
- Qualitative training in specific areas of technology and entrepreneurship as a way of providing opportunity for students to take advantage of their inherent talent and theoretical skills to generate needed entrepreneurial ventures and wealth.
- Acquisition of entrepreneurship training and technology education which forms the bedrock for industrialization, growth, development and wealth creation. This in turn will help all Nigerians and the global communities as students create industries and jobs associated with their skills.
Delta State Polytechnic Admission Requirements
NATIONAL DIPLOMA
Candidates with five (5) CREDITS PASSES including English Language at not more than two (2) sitting in SSCE, NECO, GCE O/L, NABTEB and its equivalent in any of the following subjects: Chemistry, Physics, Mathematics, Geography, Technical Drawing, Fine Art, Economics, Islamic Religious Knowledge, Christian Religious Knowledge, Biology, Agric-Science, Government and Literature in English are eligible to apply.
HIGHER NATIONAL DIPLOMA
Candidates for any of the Higher National Diploma (HND) courses must possess the National Diploma (ND) of the Polytechnic with a minimum of Lower Credit or an equivalent qualification from other similar institutions whose course have earned NBTE accreditation. In addition, candidates must have satisfied the Delta State Polytechnic Matriculation requirements for the National Diploma Programme and must have at least one year Post National Diploma (ND) Industrial Experience. Evidence of relevant one year Post-ND Industrial Experience and academic transcripts from the candidate’s Institution must be submitted along with the allocation for Higher National Diploma admission. Where the applicant’s qualification falls short of Lower Credit, he/she should have at least (2) years Industrial Experience. In Office Technology and Management Department, preference will be given to candidates with good grades in skill subjects of Shorthand, Typewriting and Computer Science Technology

Shops: Skill Acquisition Training Centre
Delta State SOMATECH will has both a machine shop and a woodworking shop, where students can build and modify models and machine parts.
The various consultancy, recertification and skill acquisition training programmes shall be Co-coordinated by a Co-ordinator.
Delta State SOMATECH's information technology is sophisticated and accessible. Students are required to purchase a laptop and selected software through the school. Delta State SOMATECH will provides a wireless network that covers all dormitory, classrooms and laboratory areas. The Couch Computer Laboratory is available 24/7 and has atleast 5 PC's and workstations. Printing will be available in each classroom, library, computer laboratory which includes large format plotting. Among the software that will be available are finite element analysis, computational fluid dynamics and naval architecture programs.
In addition, Delta State SOMATECH's Local Area Network (LAN) offers wireless service – providing access all over campus. All students, HOD's, and staff have email accounts and unlimited internet access.
In teaching both theory and practice, Delta State SOMATECH will offers an array of state-of-the-art labs designed specifically to help students explore and master naval architecture and marine technology. Among the facilities:
The chemistry lab, which contains equipment for performing inorganic chemistry experiments and the examination of technology materials The physics lab, where students conduct experiments involving heat, sound, and light; the lab offers a range of equipment including thermal expansion apparatus, spectroscopes, and optical benches. The materials science lab, where students examine and test metals, is equipped with metallurgical microscopes, heat-treating furnaces, hardness testing machines, and other machines. The marine technology and mechanical lab, where students test performance, is equipped with a turbocharged diesel engine, a turbogenerator, and other apparatuses. The material testing and structural lab, which offers a range of equipment, including a 200,000-pound Baldwin-Southwark tension compression machine, electrical strain gauge instrumentation, and other units. The electrical lab, which offers instrumentation to measure resistance, capacitance, inductance, current, voltage, and power; it also includes motors, generators, transformers, and other equipment. The fluids lab, which has a small wind tunnel, electrolytic tank, and an oscillating table that simulates ship motions. The ship model towing tank and instrumentation room, which is used for both course work and student research; it enables students to tow ship models and test resistance and test model propellers - with the wavemaker simulating lively seas.
THE COLLEGE LIBRARY
Not many campuses can offer 24-hour access to the library - but Delta State SOMATECH will does. And that's just one aspect of our unusual library. .
Delta State SOMATECH Library's comprehensive collection is designed to match the Institute's curriculum. Standard works on engineering and naval architecture, professional periodicals, and a selection of rare works on naval architecture and marine technology form the basis of the collection.
A general collection of books and periodicals in the sciences and humanities, along with extensive interlibrary loan opportunities, round out the collection.
The main College Library is situated on the Ground floor of the Administrative Block of the College while the Reference/Audio-Visual Library is on the ground floor.
The main library which has a seating capacity for fifty-six users at a time is fully air-conditioned.
The Reference/Audio-Visual library stocks various materials such as journals, magazines, newspapers, FAO publications, students' projects, reference materials, an overhead projectors, slide projectors, films, multimedia projector, video camera, video machines, television set, etc. Students are also shown recorded films during practical sessions at the Audio-Visual library that has a seating capacity for twenty-eight students.
Materials in the library are acquired through the Management's assistance, the Education Tax Fund (ETF), and International Organisations such as the World Bank, FAO, ICLAM, CTA, Ranfurly book services of the United Kingdom through the National Library of Nigeria, etc.
Opening Hour
The Library is opened within the hours of 9.00am to 8.00pm (Mondays to Fridays).
Mission: To source for materials relevant to the course of studies and to also make available up to date informational materials for our organisation and other users in general.
Staff Library
The Library is currently manned by a professional Librarian and being assisted by three Library Officers, one Library Secretary, one Library Assistant and one clerical officer. The entire staff have been trained on the operations of the library.
Policies: The Library being an academic library is open to; The College Staff, Lecturers, Students in related fields of study, Researchers, Other stakeholders.
