However,
they are materials that are common in the teaching of social studies. The researchers
are the ones to be discussed here, for want of space and time. Adeyemo (1998)
identified the following Resources;-
a.
Pictures -
These can help with suggestion or to explain things which are omitted when
teaching a particular lesson, they direct students attention to the point where
the teacher want to stress on, to the students, picture generally give or
create specific impression on the minds of students.
b.
Illustrations- The
term illustration is commonly applied to the wise use of teaching resource,
pictures, diagrams etc to the employment of examples and comparisons to
elucidate either an argument or to back up a narrative story.
c.
Black
board-
The black board remains the most useful visual resources the teacher possess.
It is no exaggeration to say that black board may become a snare, for the
teacher’s work should not all be ‘talk’ neither should it be ‘chalk’. The blackboard
is generally used so as to enable the teacher bring the students’ sense of
sight to aid their sense of hearing. By so doing, the teacher makes use of two
sense instead of one and the more sense the teacher can use in combination, the
more firmly with the knowledge been fixed. Accordingly, for teaching purpose,
blackboard illustrations are more effective in proportion as it is rapid and
incidental. When a student sees a sketch grow rapidly under the teachers’ hand,
he carries little convention. Therefore all blackboard work should be in the
style of handwriting used by children in the class. Blackboard sketches should
be made quickly.
d.
Television- Most
programme will be of practical character with a view to present such
educational materials as are not normally available in the classroom.
e.
Tape
Recorder-
These are particularly good for teaching language and speed training as in the
case with English language and social studies. Students benefits from the
reproduction of their own speech, class dramatization and musical reproduction.
f.
Photograph-
Pictures and photographs have the greatest value for what they are designed to
illustration if used and the time when explanations or comments are being made
on them.
Onyemezi (1985) in the Nigeria journal
of education (2004) suggests a comprehensive listing of resource materials and
devices. The materials are real object and life situations, models, picture,
graphs, charts, film ship motion picture and related projection equipment,
tapes/tapes recorders, records/record players, radio, television and video
recording, computer assisted instruction and textbooks.
Mkpa (1991). Opined for the use of community resources, a
term he defined as those facilities found with the community, outside the
school and which can be used to promote teaching and learning. These resources
from part of educational resource could be harnessed and employed in teaching
specified subjects. According to him, community resources are classified in
four main types which include Natural, human, material and institutional
resources. These community materials resources are all man-made products of
technology produced by people in an attempt to enhance their conditions of
living which includes; mobility, Habitat, roads etc. Chukwu (2005) listed
teaching Resources in social studies as computer, textbook, pictures, diagrams,
newspaper/magazines. All these according to (chukwu) aid effective and
efficient teaching/ learning in junior secondary schools.
