1. Brooding of
day old chicks
This is the process of raising the day old chicks
through artificial method by applying heat materials which can maintain their
normal body temperature. The brooding
houses were constructed with concrete floor, asbestos roof, wire gauze covered
with Nylon wood shavings was sprayed on the floor after it was swept,
disinfected with Lysol, followed by application of some materials shavings feeding troughs, drinking through
and drugs
2. Washing Of Drinkers: In this
experiment, the drinking through are packed out from the brooding house, washed
thoroughly inside a bowl of clean water, with a sponge and later rinsed.
3. Supplying of
feeds and drinking water to the birds: In
Feeding the birds, Ad-libitum (Continuous feeding)
were properly adopt this was done manually by pouring the feed contents (mash
into the wooden and metal feeding troughs.
Feeders were topped with feeds and shaked when inadequate feed was noticed whereas in
drinking water application, the drinkers were first filled with water and
covered with their proper lid or cover, and then carried and arranged at its
different position with in the litters where the drinkers stand is placed. During the turning of the drinking through
containing water, the cover was pressed and turned upside down. The water flowing channel of the cover was
positioned at down-sloped side, the essence of this is to prevents the water from pouring on the litter.
Feeders and drinkers were gradually raised up as the
growth rate of the birds increases to avoid contamination.
But in the
layers house, feeding and drinking
water were done automatically
3.
Removal of
dung and wood shavings replacement: The
bird
dungs
was scrapped, gathered and placed away
from the poultry house with the aid of
shovel, packer and sack when wet litter
or presence of ammonium gas (NH4)
were noticed . After the dungs removal, the wood shavings were sprayed immediately on the litter
4.
Debeaking: This was carefully done when packing and cannibalism was noticed. Beak trimmer was
plugged to electric power source, thereby enables the blade to burn the upper curved beak of the birds. It is
carefully done to prevent the burning of
the birds tongue. Demarcation of litter was first done to
avoid confusion and miscalculation
6.
Litter extension and birds transfer: The litter was gradually
extended when the birds increases in growth rate. Transfers
of birds to another poultry house was equally performed. During the transfer,
the smaller ones were separated from the
bigger ones. The essence of this
exercise is to reduce over crowding and feeding competition
7.
Disinfections: This is the key element of hygiene and it was
carried out in two (2) ways
i.
Foot dip was is
infected by total removal of old water solution containing Lysol disinfectant
and been refilled with a fresh one, and
this was first routine performed in
every morning before entering the animal house
ii.
Also, floors were
entirely swept and disinfected when congested or contaminated
8. Drug Administration: Drug
are very necessary in poultry management, since it helps in preventing and
curing of birds against diseases. The type and dosage of drugs treatment is
dependent on the type of disease
infestation and age of birds

Handling of eggs in the layer house : Egg were carefully picked and well arranged in
the creates cracked, and pewee eggs (small size) were separated
from whole ones while picking them
The arrangement of
eggs in the crates was based on sorting and grading, followed by packing the eggs in the store
10. Handling of sick birds and mortalities: The sick birds
were properly culled and isolated from the pen to the sick
pen followed by treating them with the recommended drugs depending on the type of sickness and diseases affecting
them
The
mortality (dead ones) are also culled
out from the pen, then followed by
digging the soil deeply and
buried them
