Statement of the Research Problem
Instructional material cannot be over-emphasis in the
teaching of social studies. Because it is very important to ensure proper
understanding. Every average educated minded individual in Nigeria is aware of
the falling standard of education, lack of academic optimist on the side of the students and teachers, poor academic performance unlike what was obtained in
the past.
As a result of this development, this study is
preoccupied with determining whether or not students’ performance in the
classroom subjects is enhanced when oral instruction and students’ involvement
are complemented by effective use of instructional materials.
Purpose of the Study
The
purpose of this study was to find out the effect of social studies
instructional materials on student’s performance in secondary school with
reference to Ebonyi Local Government Area Ebonyi State.
Restatement of the Research Purpose
The purpose of the study was to investigate the effect
of instructional materials in the teaching of social studies in secondary
schools in Ebonyi municipal council.
Research Methodology and Design
Two instructional models were design and applied for
the purpose of this experiment. The first is the orthodox instructional model
(O.I.M) with this model, no instructional was used. The teacher was the focal
point and the dominating figure during the lesson, while, the students were at
the receiving end. In other words, the teachers personally was imposed on
students throughout the lesson.
The second model is the
instructional material model (I.M.M). Here adequate use of instructional material was made during the course of the
lesson. Instructional materials designed to illustrate information clearly are
of two groups. The first is of general nature and includes.
The set out objectives of this work were undertaken to search for the effects of social studies instructional materials on students’ performance in teaching learning situations in secondary schools. Poor performance of students in variety of subjects in senior secondary Certificate examination results necessitated the study.
However, base on data available to us, the effects of
instructional materials on the students performance cannot be undervalued.
Instructional materials stimulate and help further study, help children to take
active interest in the topic presented, it does have emotional impact on the
children and affect their attitude towards what are portrayed.
The
effective use of social studies instructional materials or devices or
techniques help the classroom teacher to pass the intended message effectively
and meaningfully to the students, so that, the learners receives, understand,
retain.
