The role of the colleges and halls and the University in student life

Almost every student at Oxford is a member of a college. Most colleges admit both graduate and undergraduate students.

Admissions

The undergraduate admissions process is co-ordinated by the University, but colleges are ultimately responsible for selecting and admitting their undergraduate students. 
The University admits graduate students, but once they have been offered a place by the University, graduate students are also selected by a college.

Facilities and resources

Colleges provide accommodation, catering, social spaces, pastoral care and other facilities for their students.
The University provides centralised student services, including careers and counselling, as well as resources such as libraries, laboratories and museums.

Teaching

Colleges organise tutorial teaching for undergraduates. Tutorials are central to studying at Oxford, giving students an opportunity to discuss and explore their subject in small groups with an expert in the field.
  1. The University supervises graduate students and examines graduate theses. 
  2. The University determines the content of degree courses, and organises lectures, seminars and lab work for both undergraduate and graduate students. 
  3. The University sets and marks examinations, and awards degrees to students.

The Clarendon scholars come from all continents in the world: from the USA to Australia, Venezuela to Vietnam and from Norway to Nigeria. About 140 scholarships are awarded each year.

Clarendon Scholarship at University of Oxford, UK

The Clarendon Scholarships are awarded to academically excellent students with the best proven and future potential. The awards are sponsored by Oxford University Press and are only available at the University of Oxford. The scholarships are for graduate degrees and open to full-time and part-time students. Decisions on awards are based solely on academic merit.

What is the Worth of this Award

  1. First, Clarendon Scholarships cover tuition and college fees in full and a generous grant for living expenses.
  2. Secondly, the grant for living expenses for scholars on a full-time course is normally sufficient to cover the living expenses of a single student living in Oxford.
  3. Lastly, Scholars on a part-time course receive a pro-rata amount of the full-time grant for living expenses. Part-time Master’s scholars are offered 1/3 of the full-time grant per year for two years. Part-time DPhil scholars are offered 1/6 of the full-time grant per year for six years.

Note: Under the new Combined Award Policy for Clarendon Scholarship holders that came into effect some years back. Clarendon scholars may be in receipt of a funding package covering tuition fees, college fees and living expenses from multiple sources, and the value of the funding package from these sources may equal up to the total of a standard Clarendon Scholarship plus an additional £2,500 p/a for living expenses

In addition, Clarendon scholars may hold small external awards that cover non-fee costs (e.g. to support conference attendance, fieldwork costs and travel) up to the equivalent GBP value of £2,500 p/a without any adjustment to your Clarendon funding package.

Duration of Awards  at University of Oxford United Kingdom

Clarendon Scholarships are offered for the full period that you are liable to pay tuition fees to the University, which is usually the same as the length of your course
 Scholarships are subject to an annual renewal process based on satisfactory academic progress.

Level of Study at University of Oxford

  • All degree-bearing courses at graduate level are eligible.
  • This encompasses all full-time and part-time Master’s courses (MSt, MSc, BCL/MJur, MBA, MFE, MPhil, BPhil, MSc by Research, MTh) and all DPhil (same as PhD) programmes.
  • Postgraduate Certificate or Diploma courses are not eligible for this scholarship.

Eligibility to Study at University of Oxford

  1. From September 1 of every year, all graduate applicants will be eligible for this prestigious scholarship funding which has, up until now, only been open to candidates with overseas fee status
  2. Candidates applying to start a new graduate course at Oxford are eligible. This includes students who are currently studying for a Master’s degree at Oxford but who will be re-applying for a DPhil (you would be eligible for funding for the DPhil)
  3. Candidates who already have a place but who deferred entry from a previous year are not eligible to apply (as you can apply for Clarendon in the year that you applied for your place and then, if you are successful, you can apply to defer your funding if you need to defer your place)
  4. Students who will continue to study for the same degree at Oxford in the next year are not eligible for this scholarship.

How to Apply for Clarendon Scholarship

In the same fashion, Applying for graduate study at Oxford University you will automatically be considered for a Clarendon Scholarship. You do not need to submit any additional documents specifically for the Clarendon Scholarships and there is no separate scholarship applicatio form.

Application Deadline for the Scholarship

The application deadline for Clarendon scholarship is January 8 or 19, 2018 depending on the university admission deadline for the course you are applying to.
