WHAT IS INTERNET
Definition
-
Internet is a global computer network providing a variety of information and
communication facilities, consisting of interconnected networks using
standardized communication protocols. It also means of connecting a computer to
any other computer anywhere in the world via dedicated routers and servers.
When two computers are connected over the Internet, they can send and receive
all kinds of information such as text, graphics, voice, video, and computer
programs.
No one owns Internet,
although several organizations the world over collaborate in its functioning
and development. The high-speed, fiber-optic cables (called backbones) through
which the bulk of the Internet data travels are owned by telephone companies in
their respective countries.
The Internet grew out of the
Advanced Research Projects Agency's Wide Area Network (then called ARPANET)
established by the US Department Of Defense in 1960s for collaboration in
military research among business and government laboratories. Later
universities and other US institutions connected to it. This resulted in
ARPANET growing beyond everyone's expectations and acquiring the name
'Internet.'
The development of hypertext
based technology (called World Wide Web, WWW, or just the Web) provided means
of displaying text, graphics, and animations, and easy search and navigation
tools that triggered Internet's explosive worldwide growth.
The Internet is a global
network connecting millions of computers. More than 190 countries are linked
into exchanges of data, news and opinions. According to Internet Live Stats, as
of December 30, 2014 there was an estimated 3,037,608,300 Internet users
worldwide. The number of Internet users represents nearly 40 percent of the
world's population. The largest number of Internet users by country is China,
followed by the United States and India.
In September 2014, the total
number of websites with a unique hostname online exceeded 1 billion. This is an
increase from one website (info.cern.ch) in 1991.
DIFFERENCE BETWEEN INTERNET AND INTRANET
INTERNET
- Internet is network of Computers which is open for all.
- Internet itself contains a large number of intranets.
- Unlimited number of users.
- Visitor’s traffic is unlimited.
- Contains unlimited source of information.
- Collection of various LANs, WANs and MANs.
INTRANET
- Intranet is network of Computers designed for a specific group of users.
- Intranet can be accessed from Internet but with restrictions.
- Limited number of Users.
- Limited visitor’s traffic.
- Contains only specific group purpose information.
- Mostly any of LAN or MAN or WAN.
EXPLANATION OF DIFFERENCE BETWEEN INTERNET AND INTRANET
- The main differences in Internet and Intranet are as follows
- Internet is general to PCs all over the world whereas Intranet is specific to few PCs.
- Internet has wider access and provides a better access to websites to large population whereas Intranet is restricted.
- Internet is not as safe as Intranet as Intranet can be safely privatized as per the need.
The Internet is an open,
public space, a worldwide system of interconnected computer networks. It is a
worldwide, publicly accessible series of interconnected computer networks that
transmit data by packet switching using the standard Internet Protocol (IP). It
is a network of networks that consists of millions of smaller domestic,
academic, business, and government networks, which together carry various
information and services, such as electronic mail, online chat, file transfer,
and the interlinked Web pages and other documents of the World Wide Web.
The Internet is a
combination of several media technologies and an electronic version of
newspapers, magazines, books, catalogs, bulletin boards, and much more. This
versatility gives the Internet its power.
While an intranet is
designed to be a private space. An intranet may be accessible from the
Internet, but as a rule it's protected by a password and accessible only to
employees or other authorized users.
From within a company, an
intranet server may respond much more quickly than a typical Web site. This is
because the public Internet is at the mercy of traffic spikes, server
breakdowns and other problems that may slow the network. Within a company,
however, users have much more bandwidth and network hardware may be more
reliable. This makes it easier to serve high-bandwidth content, such as audio
and video, over an intranet.
