ANALYSIS OF ENTREPRENEURSHIP DETERMINANTS AMONG THE RICE FARMERS IN EBONYI STATE, NIGERIA.



ABSTRACT
This study Investigated the Entrepreneurship determinants among the rice farmers in Ebonyi State, Nigeria. A combination of multi stage sampling techniques was adopted in the collection of data from one hundred and sixty two rice farmers using structured questionnaires. Both descriptive and inferential statistics were employed to realize the objectives of the study. 

The result indicates that majority (32.1%) of rice farmers in Ebonyi state were between the ages 33-38years and also most of them were males (54.9%) with a number 6-10 persons. The result further revealed that majority (33.3%) are married people possessed 2-3 hectares of (33.9%) and indicated farming is their primary occupation with 6-10 years farming experience and possessed secondary school qualification in the study area. The result equally revealed that live profit motive (11.8%), Government concession (11.7%), livelihood opportunities (11.3%), Desire to be independent (10.9%), land availability (10.6%) are their major motivational factors that influenced into rice business in the area. The result equally shows that age, high profit, entrepreneurship history, educational qualification, financial availability family size, cost of fertilizer, labour cost, years of experience and availability of improved seed have positive influence entrepreneurship decision and the R-2 value was 84.% in the regression model of the study. The study also revealed the major constraints associated with rice farmers; they include; lack of fund, in availability of improved seed varieties, high cost of fertilizer and lack of land. Based on the findings of the following recommendations were proffered in the study area; Agribusiness-investors should be encouraged to venture into rice farming including rice processing, destining, distribution and marketing which will help to enhance food security, job opportunities and also contribute to the national development and growth efficiency and this study calls policies aimed at encouraging new entrants into rice business to absorb excess labour force available. This means the young rice producers and educated farmers should be encouraged into rice business.
