THE CONCEPT AND DEFINITION OF PROSTITUTION

Prostitution is a word, which applies to for more circumstances that its usually English definitions. Beyond the English definition, it also embraces definitions in various spheres. The legal definition for example talks about whoring while the English definition has it as the act of offering or devoting one’s talent to an unworthy use or cause.
Oxford dictionary of sociology (1994), defines prostitution as ‘the provision of sexual favours for financial reward, clerk (2001) classified prostitution as a deviant behaviors (sexual). Based on this, he defined prostitution as the act in which certain individuals (which are most females) offer themselves for sexual inter-cause (with most males) and accept in cash, material goods etc.

Abraham Flexner’s foundational text on the study of prostitution (1913) defined it thus “characterized by three element variously combined barter, promiscuity and emotional indifference. Any person is a prostitute who habitually or inter-mittently has sexual relations more or less promiscuously for money and other mercenary consideration.
Sheila Jeffreys (2004) holds the view that traditions of prostitution by male commentators completely omit men from the definition and sex prostitution as a sexual activity of women. Thus Angele Kehealani (2004) gave an over view definition “prostitution is what you do for money that you would not do with out been paid”.
Form the above, prostitution as a sexual activity is the practice of engaging in undiscriminating sexual activity for immediate payment. Prostitution is been practiced by either sex is male or female, it could be heterosexual where the female is the prostitute and the male counterpart as the client.
