·
The
main risks to health from improper handling of wastes arise from breeding of
disease vectors (particularly flies and rodents). Improper storage and
disposal and disposal of wastes provide favourable environmental for the
vectors.
·
The
most obvious environmental damage caused by solid waste is aesthetic, the
ugliness of streets and the destruction of the beauty of countryside by
uncontrolled dumping of wastes.
·
Most
serious and often unrecognized is the transfer of pollution to water, which
occurs when the leachate from a refuse dump enters surface or ground water
·
Air
pollution caused by uncontrolled and inefficient burning of wastes (EBSSPA
monograph 1, 2010)
·
Accidental
fire outbreak
·
Atmosphere
air pollution
·
Blockage
of drains that leads to flooding
All these above problems can be
minimized by competent engineering and method of operation, making most solid
waste management strategy of essential state concern as it is in Ebonyi State
now.
