INTRODUCTION
In
Nigeria the oldest form of education is the traditional form of education which
was informal form of education, before the introduction of western education by
the missionaries. The missionaries being the first to introduce western
education in Nigeria, had greatly influenced Nigerian education and made it
what it is today.
The
colonial masters recognized that educated Nigerians would no longer be willing
to remain under their control and hence they decided to train them for
subordinate positions. When the Nigerian Government now realizes that education
under the colonial rules was designed mainly to benefit the white men goal in
Nigeria. It was on this basis that the Nigerian Government decided to establish
government schools in every Local Government headquarters. With the help of the
establishment of these schools, many Nigerian citizen started schooling and
this opened job opportunities to most Nigerians.
According
to Okoh (1985:1) the missionaries were still participating in the smooth
running of schools in Nigeria. In Nigerian society, education is regarded as a
means to an end and not an end itself. Education was generally considered as a
means for immediate induction of children preparatory for adulthood.
The missionaries in Nigerian are now urging
the Nigerian government to handover to them the schools, one must not forget
that there was discrimination by the missionaries to employ those who were not
trained by them in the past. There were difficulties in gaining admission into
these schools until 1960 when Nigeria gained their independence. Since
independence, the standard of education has increased and Nigeria has got many
schools today. The running of public education in Kaduna North Local Government
Area of Kaduna State will be of great importance not only to kaduna state but
to Nigerian as a whole. Problems of
funding and location to mention a few can also affect the education of an
individual With these factors, one will find it difficult to acquire education.
But now, there are schools in all the locality and people can now get quick
admission into any of the primary and secondary schools nearer to their own
locality.
The establishment of evening lesson like the
continuing education and the extra moral classes in different places has made
it possible for the dropouts to finish their primary and secondary school
programme. This has also given an opportunity for those who are serious to
learn but have no means to continue their education with fewer problems. This
has also created an opportunity for some workers who have not yet got their
qualifications to read more in order to obtain better qualification.
