Adoptive parents according to previous findings by
Hewett, (2001) are faced with several problems. Some of these problems are
mostly psychological. He enumerated the problems to include:
-
Difficulty in
telling the child he was adopted into the family
-
An adopted child
may become curious about his natural parents and may decide to go in search of
them. An adopted child who continually insist on the search may mean that he is
having a difficult time adjusting to his
present life
-
According to him,
in a family made up of both natural and adopted children, there might be
problem of acceptance by the natural parents. This may lead to growing resentment against the
adopted child
-
In case of older
children who were adopted he further said may find it difficult to face the
future as he may constantly remember his natural family. Some of these problem
according to Ezugwu, Obi and Onah (2002) are opposition to adoption by one of the couples or
disagreement, people in the enlivenment would start telling the child history
of the child belonging to government,
extended family problem because the
child never be accepted and can
make the couple to divorce each other,
long procedure in the adoption process, stress from government as couple may
have to travel out of their station, fear of what people l will say and finally to
enlightenment on child adoption.
Steck (2002), further
sated the fear that couple should have which includes the fear of disloyalty by
the child and future claim by the biological parents, lack of genetic linkage
with the child and religious reasons
