Committee is known differently by various
names – task force, board, commission and team etc. even if it bears any name,
committee are essentially the same thing.
Different definitions of
committee
A committee can be defined as a group of
individuals taken, elected or selected from the entire organization to do some
assigned work collectively.
Committee is however, different from other
groups of people because it has this notion of specific or particular
commitment. It is none the less, the most controversial device of an
organization because of the many types of authority given to it.
Sometimes,
consultation with officers of an organization does not necessarily mean a
committee.
TYPES OF COMMITTEE
There are various types of committees divided on the basis of time,
function, character, structure, etc. it can be classified as formal, informal,
ad-hoc (temporary), permanent. It can equally be classified as lien or plural
executive. For instance, the board of directors of a company who take decisions
that effect the subordinates
CLASSIFICATION BASED ON TIME.
Under this classification, there are two types of committees; permanent
committee and temporary committee.
A permanent body of individual formed for a specific purpose is called
a permanent committee or standing committee.
On the other hand, any committee formed for a special purpose is called
or known as a temporary or ad hoc committee.
CLASSIFICATION BASED ON THE FUNCTIONS.
This classification of committee consists of two types of committees
called managerial committee and non-managerial committee.
Managerial committees; denotes the formation of a committee which
undertakes managerial functions like finance committee, purchase committee etc.
The non-managerial committee does not take managerial functions.
CLASSIFICATION BASED ON STRUCTURE
Classification based on function comprises of
two types of committees like formal committee and in-formal committee.
Formal Committee: this is a committee set up or established as part of an organizations
structure.
Informal Committee: this type of committee is not formed as a part of an organization
structure.
CLASSIFICATION BASED ON CHARACTER
On the basis of character, there are two
types of committees like line committee and staff committee.
Line Committee is a committee, which is vested with the powers to decide and execute
the decision.
Staff Committee is an advisory committee to render advices in different field.
