SUMMARY

From the discussions on pragmatics and political speeches, the huge data, on analysis of political speeches from the foreign scene, has not guaranteed the same in African setting and Nigeria in particular. By this token it becomes very necessary to advance this field of knowledge by looking at the perlocutionary force of former president Olusegun Obasanjo of Nigeria’s political speeches, to enable the researchers answer the questions as stated in our research questions.

A linguistically based research about the perlocutionary force of political speeches of Obasanjo is necessitated  by ongoing reassessment of earlier views about the pragmatic theories, speech act theory and perlocutionary force with a view to determining how applicable these theories are to our deeper insight into the field of pragmatics and perlocutionary force in particular and to our  Nigerian situation.
