HYDROGEOLOGY IN ABAKALIKI, NIGERIA

The study area has a network of streams, which are linked to the Ebonyi River. The streams are found within Ogbuchi-Amaechi, Ekaenu- Inyimaegu, Abakakili urban, Agbaja and Ugboloke areas (see map of the study area).
Water supply to the study area is inadequate particularly in the dry seasons. This is owned to the climatic and geologic setting of the study area. Water is sourced through cracks in the mapped area. The absence of sandstone makes it impossible for a good aquriferous condition to exist in the study area. For all
these reasons, boreholes sunk in the areas are shallow.
A good number of springs exist in the study area. The0se springs are as a result of cracks from shales and pyrodastics.
In the study area, water supply to the inhabitants of the mapped area is through these springs, shallow boreholes and Ebonyi River.
