Question 3
‘The School Hero’ is an award meant for the student considered to have exhibited exemplary leadership qualities. As the Senior Prefect, write a letter to the Head of your school, giving three reasons why your nominee should be given the award.
Observation to No. 3 Answers
This was quite a popular question. Many candidates who attempted it were able to give convincing reasons to support their nominees. They listed many good leadership qualities which their nominees possessed. Many of them were able to substantiate their points with relevant instances in which these qualities were displayed by their nominees. Some candidates, on the other hand, could not advance good and convincing reasons why their nominee should be given the award.
Question 4
You are the main speaker in a debate on the topic: ‘Students in rural schools have more advantages than those in the urban centres’. Write your arguments for or against the motion.
Observation to No. 4 Answers
This was not a very popular question. Many of the candidates who chose this question seemed to have a firm grip on the topic. Most candidates who tackled it were able to give, at least, three points in support of their stand.
Question 5
Write a story ending with the statement: We apologised to each other and made up.
Observation to No. 5 Answers
This was not a popular question and many of those who attempted it ended up writing long and irrelevant stories which did not show that they understood the expression. They just tagged on the expression at the end of their story. Also, many candidates muddled up the tenses in the course of the narration. Candidates should be taught that in storytelling, the tense used should be the past.
Question 5
COMPREHENSION PASSAGE
Observation to No. 5 Answers
The passage was interesting and didactic. The subject matter was within the experience and grasp of the candidates and the information required for answering content questions correctly was very clear in the passage. Generally, there was a noticeable improvement in the performance of candidates in this section.
Question 6
SUMMARY
Observation to No. 6 Answers
The passage was interesting and straight forward and candidates were required to read it and summarize in a given number of sentences, details in the passage. Some candidates were able to do this but it was obvious that a lot of them had problems separating main ideas from details as they merely lifted whole sentences and sometimes, whole paragraphs from the passage. It was also observed that some candidates used preambles that when taken with the rest of each answer, did not make sentences.
