This is today's Metal Works Paper 1 & 2 past questions and answers for people preparing to write WAEC GCE, NECO GCE, NABTEB for Nov/Dec exam. As a matter of fact, this General Certificate Examination ca also be used for May/June Exams.

(a) What is a model in designing?
(b) Explain three methods of gathering information to solve a design problem.
(c) State one use each of the following in soldering:

- (ii) Flux;
- (iii) File.
(d) State one forging operation.
OBSERVATIONS FOR QUESTION 1
Most of the candidates who attempted this question did not find it difficult Except for part (a) of the question. The required response to part (a) of the Question is model is used to demonstrate the effectiveness and efficiency of the functions and operation of the design.
Question 2
(a) State three potential dangers associated with the use of machines.
(b) List three safety devices found on machines which make them safe for use
(c) List two machines which when being used would require the wearing of goggle
(d) State one purpose of cutting oil
OBSERVATION FOR QUESTION 2
Most of the candidates who attempted this question did not find any part of the question difficult as they were able to provide the require responses to the various parts of the question.
Question 3
(a) What is sand casting?
(b) State the use of each of the following tools
- (i) riddle;
- (ii) strike-off bar;
- (iii) draw spike;
- (iv) gate cutter;
- (v) sprue-pins
(c) Sketch a bellow used in the foundry shop.
OBSERVATION FOR QUESTION 3
Candidates who attempted this question had problems in providing the required response to part (b) of the question. The required response to part (b) of the question are as follows:
- Riddle is used for sieving and spreading the parting sand on the patter in the drag;
- Strike-off bar is used to level the sand packed in the flask.
- Draw spike is used for drawing the pattern out of the mould after ramming.
- Gate cutter is used to create passages in the drag, known as gates, for the inflow of the molten metal into the cavity and the rise of surplus molten metal from the cavity when it is full.
- Sprue pins are used for making holes in the cope through which the molten metal is poured

Most of the candidates who attempted this question did not find any part of the question difficult as they were able to provide the required responses to the various part of the question.

The sketch below shows a catch plate in use when turning between centres
(a) Answer the questions below
- (i) State the difference between a tap and a die;
- (ii) State the use of a die nut.
(b) With the aid of a sketch, describe how the hand tool is used in cutting external thread on the bench.
- (i) mandrel;
- (ii) collet.
- (iii) draw spike;
(c) With the aid of a sketch, show a micrometer reading of 12.75 mm.
OBSERVATION
Most of the candidates who attempted this question could not state the Differences between a tap and a die as required in part (a) (i) of the question. The difference between a tap and a die is that a tap is used for cutting internal thread while a die is used for cutting external thread.
