Abstract
This
research explores the issue of early marriage in Ikwo Local Government Area. The
purpose to the study is to identify the causes of early marriage, the effect
and strategies to improve or combat early marriage. Three research questions were
formulated in line with the purpose to guide the study. The study will be of
significant to the parents, female child, community and government in general.
Related literature was reviewed; demographic transition theory was stated in
relation to early marriage.
Survey design method was used; instrument for data
collection was 15 item questionnaires. The data collected was analyzed using
frequency distribution and mean. Findings were made thus: Illiteracy among
parents causes early marriage, physical, social, emotional and psychological
health of the girl child is at danger. Poverty is among the major cause of
early marriage. Recommendation were made, suggestion for further studies were
also made. Summary and conclusion was drawn.
