PROCEDURE FOR SCREENING THE EYE | SIMPLE SCREENING TOOLS (PRACTICAL)

INTRODUCTION:
The school eye health programme is one which offers health education and preventive optical services to school pupils/teachers with the primary goal of ensuring that every pupil/teacher has access to optical care. Teachers and pupils can be very effective in academics, if regular optical treatment through health education are observed.

In order to detect, if there are diseases in the eye, the following exercises are necessary and are hereby recommended.

(1) The teacher will conduct a basic eye examination, such as external checking of the eye, the eye lid and surrounding areas
(2) Checking the general eye muscles and examining the front of the eye using an upright microscope e.g (a slit lamp)
(3) Using E-chart to know whether the teacher /pupil suffers from short or long sightedness.

THE BASIC PROCEDURE BY THE SCREENER/TEACHER ARE AS FOLLOWS: (PRACTICAL)
The Steps Are:
(1) Wash your hands
(2) Puton hand gloves
(3) Place the learner/teacher on a chair facing you so that his/her eyes should be close to you in order to make your observations
(4) The proper screening to know whether the eye is red or have any other defect, like swollen eye etc.
(5) You have to document your findings on health record book
(6) Make your recommendations

TOOLS/EQUIPMENT FOR THE EYE SCREENING
The tools to be used are:
(1) Hand glove
(2) Flash light
(3) Soap and water
(4) Paper tower/hand towel
(5) Chair for the leaner /screener
(6) Health record book/document
Others are:
(7) Microscope
(8) E-chart
(9) Forceps (used for holding any tool)
(10) Speclum (used to keep the eye open)
(11) Spectacles
Number 7-11 are not easily available and not mostly assessable to the teacher but only to an optician.

OBSERVATION AFTER THE SCREENING
After the practical screening, the following observations were made:
(1) The teacher/pupil’s eyes may be observed to be reddish
(2) May be observed that his/her eyes cannot see near or distant object, by the help of E.chart.
(3) The person may be observed to be lacking Vitamin A.
(4) May have been observed to have physical damage.
Number 3 and 4 are mostly as a result of test conducted by the optician. After the screening/observation, some recommendation and referrals could be made for further visit to the specialist or optician.

In conclusion our goals should be a regular and proper eye hygiene, in order to avoid eye disorder /diseases at early stage or even in future in our daily life activities, if all these observations, care, protection are put in place, there will be a less generation of eye defect.
