Freedom
House promotes the spread of freedom and democracy around the world through
research, advocacy, and programs that support frontline activists. We are a
leader in identifying threats to freedom through our highly regarded analytic
reports, including Freedom in the World, Freedom of the Press, Freedom on the
Net, and Nations in Transit. With 13 field offices and two U.S. offices, we
support the right of every individual to be free.
Position
Summary The External Relations Intern will have the opportunity to support
Freedom House congressional outreach, and to assist with communications, and
developments efforts. She/he will work directly with the press, members of
congress and their staff, and with Freedom House’s external audiences to engage
and educate them on democracy and human rights issues and to raise awareness of
violations of these rights around the world. This position is based in
Washington, DC and reports to the Senior Manager for Advocacy.

Bachelor’s
degree in political science, international relations, or related field, or
current college or graduate student Strong ability to communicate effectively
in English, both verbally and in writing Mastery of MS Office Suite,
specifically Word, Excel and PowerPoint Demonstrated knowledge and interest in
international human rights and international relations Excellent research,
analytical, writing and organizational skills Knowledge of the U.S. legislative
system and processes Experience using social media platforms such as Twitter,
YouTube, etc., ideally for advocacy Ability to work well independently and as
part of a team Ability to plan, organize, prioritize work, and multi task to
meet tight deadlines Ability to apply superb attention to detail and
consistently produce timely and error-free work Experience working for or with
Congress preferred Eagerness to be creative and take initiative on new ideas
and projects Ability to maintain the highest degree of confidentiality
regarding all aspects of work at all times
Some Duties and
Responsibilities
Assist
in the creation and distribution of external content for Freedom House
including press releases, media alerts and website content Assist with outreach
to congressional offices Attend congressional hearings and briefings Update and
maintain our internal contacts database Interact with and help maintain Freedom
House’s social networks (on Facebook, Twitter, and LinkedIn) Other
administrative duties and responsibilities as assigned.
