METHODOLOGY OF IMPLEMENTING 6-3-34 SYSTEM IN SECONDARY SCHOOLS

CHAPTER THREE
METHODOLOGY FACTORS THAT MILITATE AGAINST THE IMPLEMENTATION OF 6-3-3-4 SYSTEM AS ENCOUNTERED BY HEADS OF SECONDARY SCHOOLS
The methodology adopted in this research is presented under the following nine major headings:-
1.                  Research design
2.                  Area of the study
3.                  Population of the study
4.                  Sample and sampling technique
5.                  Instrument for data collection
6.                  Validation of the instrument

7.                  Reliability of the instrument
8.                  Methods of data collection
9.                  Methods of data analysis

3.2       Research Design
The descriptive survey research design was used in carrying out the study. According to Nworgu (1991) this survey is useful in studies involving varied responses and assessment of prevailing situation at a point. This design is appropriate for this study because it sought to determine the characteristics of a sample in a population.
Hence it enabled the researcher to collect detailed and factual information using a questionnaire on the implementation problem of the 6-3-3-4 system encountered by secondary school heads in Onicha local Government Area.

3.3       Area of the Study
The area of the study is restricted to the implementation problems of the 6-3-3-4 system encountered by secondary school heads in Onicha Local Government Area of Ebonyi State.
The research was conducted in this area covering the fifteen public secondary schools in it.

3.4       Population of the Study
The population of the study comprises the fifteen secondary schools in Onicha Local Government Area. These include fifteen  (15) heads, one hundred and fifty three (153) teachers and sixty (60) no- tutorial staff. In all these are 228 tutorial and non tutorial staff. The data was collected from Ebonyi State Ministry of Education, Abakaliki (school enrolment in Onicha Local Government Area as at December 2011. However, only 200 staff was used for the study.

3.5       Sample and Sampling Technique
In selecting the staff, that are the respondent the systematic random sampling was adopted. The purpose of this system was to get an objective representation of the research population involved in the study. A systematic random picking in every school for an objective representation of secondary school staff both tutorial and non tutorial in Onicha Local Government Area. In this sample selection, thirteen (13) respondent each were picked from ten (10) schools, while fourteen (14) respondents each were picked from five (5) schools. This gave a total of two hundred (200) respondents.

3.6       Instruments for Data Collection
The instrument of data collection is based on self structured and self administered questionnaire the researcher used his hand in the distribution of the questionnaire to the respondent that were responsible for the study. The items in the questionnaire were structured in a 4-point scale that ranged from strongly agree, agree, strongly disagree, and disagree which gives the respondent equal chances of picking of his or her choice among the options. The instruments used are divided into tow sections. A & B. Section A was designed to collect information on personal data, while section B contained the questions related to the research questions.

3.7       Validation of the Instrument
My supervisor and two other lectures, one from educational administration and supervision and the other in the measurement and evaluation department validated the questionnaire items. They examined the structure and items and made useful suggestions in-the light of their suggested corrections, the final copy of the instrument was produced.

3.8       Reliability of the Instrument
The Crombach Alpha formular was used to estimate the reliability of the instrument. This involved administering copies of the questionnaire on the respondent the language of the questionnaire was simple and comprehensible. The were neither too short nor long the lecturers assessed and tested and confirmed it reliable.

3.9       Method of Data Collection
The researcher visited the respondent in their schools and distributed copies of the questionnaire and allowed every respondent to respond. At the end all copies of questionnaire were collected and used for statistical analysis.
3.10    Method of Data Analysis
The method employed was frequency and percentage. The questionnaire was made up of 20 questions.
 Strongly agree                      -           SA
Agree                          -           A
Strongly disagree     -           SD
Disagree                                 -           D
