Rabbitry unit
In
EBSU farm this unit is responsible
for keeping and maintaining rabbits in the university.
Breeds of rabbits in the unit and some
of their characteristics
(1) Chinchilla:
It is black in colour all over the body
(2) New
Zealand white: it is pure white in colour all over the
(3) Dutch:
it has black and white sports all over the body
Feeding: The animals (rabbit) are fed with growers mash every
morning and evening with roughages. The animas are given to liters of water in
each pen because they are up to 3 one pen.
ealth care:
Embazole and vitalyte to their water twice a week to take care of bacterial
infections. They are given prophylactic treatments to take care of their
general health well being.
Challenges: The major problem of the animals in this unit is high
mortality rate. This makes if difficult to raise the kits from their birth
(kindle) to weaners stages.
Disease:
some fatal diseases of rabbit include
i. Coccidiosis - it caused by coccidia, rabbits that die of coccidiosis show mottle
colour in the liver. Signs lack of appetite and dullness. I witnessed it in the
farm.
ii. Entities – This is inflammation of
gastro intestinal tract (GIT) this disease can be dispersed by rats.
