Nursing has been defined as the protection, promotion,
and optimization of health and abilities, prevention of illness and injury, alleviation of suffering
through the diagnosis and treatment of
human responses and advocacy in health care of individuals,
families, communities, and population. In
this seminar paper various challenges
facing nursing practices in Nigeria were
highlighted and they includes lack of
interest in research, conducive work environments,
advancement in science and technology, non implementation
of nursing process, non participation in making policy, quackery, poor media
projection of nursing, lack of equipment,
lack of continuous training and re-orientation, rural urban migration of nurses and financial problem/poor information system
Finally, its implication to the professional development
and some ways forward explained to include positives and negative implication and as
well as the way forwards.
RECOMMENDATION
In view of this discussion, the following recommendation
has been made:
Nurses at all level should rise to face the
challenges. A tree cannot make a thick forest. Positive good majority creates
an impact when we speak with one voice. Let us call a spade a spade. We have a
problem, cry out any where you are, bring positive ideas, read more, join the
trend of things etc
Professional association like nursing and midwifery
council of Nigeria, national association of Nigerian nurses and midwives
(N&MCN, NANNM) should understand that nursing have a serious problem to
tackle. Other countries of the world
have overcome theirs. Ours should not be exception let them work together and
defend our courses. This can be done through the following ways: lobbling, politics,
mass media etc.
Nurses are known as advocate of peace and progress
even from patient bed side, let us apply same in nursing to develop nursing as
profession.
The
schools of nursing universities offering nursing as a course should try to add
it in their curriculum to ensure that the students have the orientation about
the challenges; this ensure adequate
preparation of the future colleagues to participates actively to face
the challenges.
Involving international agencies and non-governmental
organizations to grant successor to us their support will go a long way to
assist us to overcome the challenges.
Implementation of the recent internship policy in
nursing will as well boast our ego of a step to overcome our long deserved
objective.
I strongly believed that problem identified as a
problem half solved. We cannot deny the existence of the challenges facing our
noble profession rather we should admit that “justices delayed is justice denied” we are to rise with focus and beat the drum and
dance according to the rhythm of the
music. The music is the challenges, together we can overcome them “yes we can”
