I wish to
express my views on street hawking in Nigeria in your widely read newspaper. Street
hawking is the selling of items of various kinds on the street by people of
different ages and of both sex.
They litter
the street with various items such as nylons, disposable papers,
containers and cans. Street hawkers constitute nothing but nuisance in our
society. A tidy environment is a healthy environment, goes the
saying. It is, therefore, unfortunate that our environment has become an
unhealthy one, partly due to the activities of the street hawkers.
Street
hawking has done much harm than good to those who engage in the act,
therefore, should be eradicated completely.
Readers
would bear me witness such that such act would be an eyesore to any foreign
diplomat visiting the country for the first time to behold this untidy
situation. So, it is high time we abolished this disgraceful act.
Female child
rape, which is one of the major problems in our society today, can partly be
linked to street hawking. If sexual harassment could occur in offices, then
its prevalence on the streets would be certain. This worrying situation should,
therefore, be addressed on time, at least through appropriate legislation.
