According to the news today, the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) said that it will be recruiting  a total of 1,250 staffs  across the country as soon as the FIRS receives its budget from President Mohammadu Buhari who is the Grand Commander in Chief of the Federal Republic of Nigeria which is to be done as part of its plan to increase its workforce to achieve results. According to the news, Mr. Fowler Babatunde, the Executive Director of the  Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS), disclosed this yesterday during his attendance to the meeting with the Senate committee on Finance at the National Assembly, said that:

“Fundamentally what we are deliberating is in 2016/2017/2018 budget and within the budget, we do have provision for recruitment of staff in terms of staff expansion; and in total we are expected to recruit about one thousand two hundred and fifty and we have not started and that process will start once the budget have been approved,” Mr Babatunde Fowler said.


At the time of giving this statement, Mr Babatunde Flowler grieved the non-payment of tax by Nigerians, saying only ten percent of Nigerian’s citizen’s pay their dues. Local Newspapers reports.

The tax official added this; “This week, we went to Kano state and the Emir of Kano spoke to all Muslims (and the people in general) that payment of tax that is not against Islam beliefs. But we have people in different languages with different ideas and as a tax body we have to make sure that we can educate everyone in the country”.


He also notified the committee that; “We have also been running jingles in several media as a campaign (radio and television stations) in all major languages in Igbo, Yoruba Hausa, Pidgin English and once we sensitive the public and you understand what needs to be done, then you can start enforcement or start expecting people to pay their taxes.

Mr Babatunde Folwer after his statement, continued to call on the House of Assembly to help the FIRS meet its targets, saying the service needs all the help it can get at less than 10% of VAT is remitted back to the state.


He advised Nigerians saying; “If those people who are benefiting from Nigeria and actually have love for Nigeria, they can do the right thing by paying their taxes because in paying taxes, you are empowering government to provide service,” The Executive Director of the  Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) Mr Babatunde Fowler said.

Finally, he concluded by saying; “We intend to make sure that we get at least a 90% compliance over the last few months we have added over 362,000 new tax payers and then our job is just to make sure that we enforce payment from Nigerians.”
