INTRODUCTION:
In a nutshell, self-development is revolved around improvement and innovation
of our various lives in a platform that is plaudits-awarding. In Webster’s Dictionary, it is effort
towards self-fulfillment, either through formal study programs or on one’s
own. Further
in the American Heritage Dictionary it is improvement of one’s capabilities or
potentials.
1. SKILLS/TALENTS
DEVELOPMENT
Picture
someone you idolize for his skills/talents; say; Messi, C. Ronado, Chimamanda
Achebe, Obama to mention but few you probably wish had been born with his
endowment, right? Now let me tell you that Yes! You were!
“we are often taught that talent
begins with genetic gifts- that the talented are able to effortlessly perform
feats the rest of us can only dream about; (like Messi) this is false. Talent
begins with brief, powerful encounters that spark motivation by linking your
identity to a high performing person or group. This is called ignition, and it
consists of a tiny, world-shifting thought lighting up your unconscious mind:
We
could be them”____ DANIEL COYLE
Daniel
Coyle in his book, the little Book of
Talent. A cool book filled with 52 easy, proven methods to improve
almost any skills. Limiting ourselves to practice motions provides little or no
results. The key is to make sure you apply REPS gauge method.
R- Reaching and Repeating
E- Engagement
P- Purposefulness
S- Strong, speedy feedback
REACHING AND PEPEATING: Practice should require you to operate at the
edge of your abilities; in short, you have to consistently reach out for and
constantly repeat purposefully to succeed. For
instance, the more you study a particular topic (repeatedly) the more you learn
and know it.
ENGAGEMENT:
Practice must command your attention and make you feel emotionally invested in
striving for a goal. For
instance, you are trying to perfect your slide transition for a presentation.
Should you run through the presentation over ten times? No! Running through it
ten times or more in a row will feel like death: trying to be perfect three
times in a row turns the exercise into a game you care about.
Make
sure the outcome of every practice session is something you care about. You’ll try well enough and be more engaged,
and you’ll improve more rapidly.
PURPOSEFULNESS: Practice must directly connect to the skill
you want to build.
For
instance, you feel nervous and intimidated when you have to speak to a group.
Should you rehearse at home alone? No! Try speaking to small groups of people
in less formal settings, like in a meeting.
STRONG, SPEEDY FEEDBACK:
practice must provide an immediate and consistent flow of accurate information
about performance. E.g.
you’re studying for a certification exam
.You purchased a sample test guide. Should you Take a complete test and wait
until the next day to see how you did? No! Finish a section and immediately
grade your answers to see where you went wrong and right.
HABIT/SELF-INDULGENCE AND SOLUTION
Self indulgence is a habit to overcome
in order to actualize self development. Today, we see an epidemic of obsession
with food, drink, cigarette, and womanizing, as it’s the case with the youths.
A person indulges himself by taking unrestrained pleasure in his pursuit of
enjoyment and showing undue favor to his desires and feelings. In this, we
pamper, humor, and spoil ourselves. The power of appetite is a great enticement
to self-indulgence. Nevertheless, the effects of self-indulgence come in form of
poverty, spiritual emptiness and finally death.
SCRIPTURAL SOLUTION TO
SELF-INDULGENCE
Adopt
a correct view of God. It is useful we memorize the biblical fact that God is
Love (we are Love Family). You do not stuff yourself with whatever you crave
for, or can get your hands on, for he promised to provide us with our needs
__(Jeremiah 29:11)
Further, he is able to do for us
exceedingly & above all we can never think of according to his power at
work in us.
TACTICAL SOLUTION TO
SELF-INDULGENCE
On
our own, we can outdo our desires and our undying appetite for self pleasure.
Sustainability of our plans not to indulge should be long and purposefully. If
one can map out the times of his indulging period and busy it with some work, in
due time he shall outsmart the spirit of self-indulgence
CLOSING REMARK
“Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. We ask ourselves who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, fabulous, and talented. Actually, who are you not to be? You were born to make and manifest the glory of God that is within us and as you let our own light shine, you unconsciously give other people permission to do the same”.
