INTRODUCTION
Poultry keeping can be defined as branch of science which deal with raising of birds for man’s use. In Nigeria, poultry farming has become one of the most important farming practices for many purpose. It provide business opportunity and employment for the youth. Chicken and its product are very rich source of protein which help in maintain a health living. Poultry keeping has contributed Immensely to the nation’s economy.

RAISING OF
BIRDS
Raising of birds commenced as soon as it is
purchased form the poultry farm or from the suppliers. The
first is to take them to poultry house where they will stay till they are
matured and ready for consumption or sales.
There are three major systems of raising broilers
(chicks). These includes
(i) Intensive
system
(ii) Semi
intensive system
(iii) Extensive
system.
I
adopted intensive system using battery cage. The birds were kept in cages where
they are provided with feed and other materials needed.
The
cages were cleansed and sprayed regularly to hold mites and similar pest under
control. Wire netting of suitable mesh were used to cover the top of the run
and the floor of the coop to prevent damage from rats, cats, owls and other predatory
animals.
In
confined to the house entirely with no access to the land outside.
NEED FOR A
POULTRY HOUSE
1. PROTECTION:
I provided house for the chicks to protect it form extreme climate such as
direct sun, wind, rain, theft and attack from natural enemies of the birds such as fox, dog, cat etc.
(ii) COMFORT: House provides conformability
and conducive environment for the chicks to grow and do well.
(iii) VENTILATION: Poultry house provides the
birds with fresh air and to carry off moisture.
(iv) TEMPERATURE: Poultry house provides a
moderate temperature of about 50-700F birds need a warmer
temperature at night.
(v) Provision
of ACCESSIBLE foods and clean water
for effective disposable of waste.
(vi) LIGHT: Poultry house provides light
that it desirable for the comfort of the birds.
(vii) SANITATION: I ensure that the poultry
house was kept clean everyday before and after feeding the chicks (broilers).
(viii) PROVISION
OF DRY CONDITION
Poultry
house provide dry condition which are ideal for the growth of birds (chicks).
It provides hygiene and do not predispose the birds to diseases and parasites
attack.
EQUIPMENTS/MATERIALS
The materials used in raising chicks (Broilers) are
of follows:
(a) Feeding

(c) Feeds
(d) Drugs
(e) Light
(f) Wire
net etc
Cleaning of the poultry house is done every day
usually in the morning time. I ensured that the poultry house is kept clean ever morning
by removing the left over feed, faeces and other waste product from the poultry
house. I also ensured that there is constant supply of light to keep the chicks
warm. Feeding trough, watering trough are also kept clean
every time it was used.
FEED
Feed is one of the most important aspect in poultry
production feeding chickens(broilers) is not just throwing some corn outside to
the chicks but it requires different forms of feed with different ingredients.
I used to feed the two chickens two different feeds’ the first chicken was feed
with top feed then the second one was fed with vital feed.
EVALUATION OF
TOP FEED AND VITAL FEED AS A CASE STUDY
TOP FEED - Top feed has a high protein
content than vital feed. It helps in building strong bones. Top feed is the
best in raising chickens because it enables the chickens to grow fast with much
weight and meat than the chickens (broilers) fed with vital feed. Top feed is
divided into two pellet and mash feed. Pelleted feed last longer because it is
not smooth for the chickens (broilers) to digest easily but mash feed is the
best because it is easy to eat and absorb top feed has the following contents
i. Crude
protein content 22.0%
ii. Fat
6.0%
iii. Fibre
5.0%
iv. Calcium
1.0%
v. Phosphorous
0.48%
vi. Lysine
1.20%
vii. Salt 0.30%
OBSERVATION: The chickens (broilers) feed with top feed grows fast with much weight
and high meat content than the one fed with vital feed. The chicken (broilers)
looks stronger and good body appearance than the chickens fed with vital feed.
VITAL FEED
This is a balanced poultry diet containing a
complete pellet in hygienic form. Each pellet is a compact feed compounded in a
manner to provide a balanced nutrition. Vital feed makes chickens to grow fast
without much weight and meat content.
Vital Feed

Vital feed performs best at three weeks of age.
Observation chicken (broilers) fed with vital fed grows
fast without weight and meat content.
It does not look stronger compared with one fed with
top feed.
It does not enhance much productivity compared with
top feed.
SUMMARY: Top feed is the best for
feed care for the chicks.
DRUG ADMINISTRATION
1. LaSota
is usually gives to a day old chick
2. Vitamin /vitalities -this drug was given to the chicken on
three days of commercial of the chicks drugs enhance strength and energy.
3. Antibiotic
was given to the chickens 3 times for give days through water per liter.
4. Vaccination
was done at the fourth week to their age and it was done in 5 days.
Feed were given to the chickens two times in a day.
Poultry house was kept clean throughout the time of raising the chicken to
prevent disease attack.
CONCLUSIONS
Using a top feed is the best in raising birds
(broiler) because top feed has high protein content than vital feed. Top feed
provide high thick blood used to building strong bones. Topfeed is the best
also for raising chick because it help chicken grow fast.
RECOMMENDATION
Government should provide adequate facilities for
raising birds (broiler)
Top feed should be recommended for growing of
chicks, so that, they will have strong bone.
Adequate feed should be provide to the birds
according to the feed ratio. The birds should be administered the proper
management should carried all days.
