Scheme (SIWES)
The students industrial Work
Experience Scheme (SIWES) is the accepted skills training programme, which forms
part of the approved minimum academic standards in the various degree programmes
for all the Nigerian universities. It is an effort to bridge the gap existing
between theory and practice of engineering and technology, sciences,
agriculture, medical, management and other professional educational programmes in
the Nigerian tertiary institutions.
It is aimed at exposing students to
machines and equipment, professional work methods and ways of safe-grading the
work areas and workers in industrial and other organizations. It is funded by
the Federal Government of Nigeria and jointly coordinated by the industrial
training and (ITF) and the National Universities Commission (NUC)
The
Buguma out section was established for research and training in brackish water
aquaculture.
OBJECTIVE OF SIWES:
a. To
Provide an avenue for students in the Nigeria universities to acquire
industrial skills and experience in their course of study;
b. Prepare
students for the work situation they are likely to meet after graduation.
c. Expose
student to work methods and techniques in handling equipment and machinery that
may not be available in the universities.
Make
the transition form the University to the world of work easier, and thus
enhance students’ contacts for later job placement;
e. Provide
student with opportunity to apply their theoretical knowledge in real work
situation, thereby bridging the gap between university work and actual
practices, and
f. Enlist and strengthen employers’ involvement
in the entire educational process of preparing university graduate for
employment in industry.
The role of the industrial training fund
(ITF)
i. Provide
logistic material needed to administer the scheme;
ii. Compile
lists of employers and available training place for industrial attachment and
forward such lists to the co-coordinating Agencies (i.e. NUC, NBTE, NCCE);
iii. Organize
bi-ennial conferences and seminars on SIWEs
The role of
the co-coordinating agency (NUC)
1. Establish
SIWES coordinating units.
2. Appoint
full-time industrial co-ordinators to operate the scheme at agency level;
3. Evolve
a minimum national guide programme for supervised industrial training
activities for approved SIWES courses;
4. Vet
and approve SIWES master and placement lists and forward to ITF;
5. In
collaboration with ITF, compile lists of employers for institutions’ placement lists.
THE ROLE OF
STUDENTS:
* Be
regular and punctual at respective place of attachment;
* Comply
with the employers’ rule and regulations;
* Keep
proper records of training activities and other assignments in the log-book;
* Arrange
their own living accommodation during the period of attachment;
* Submit
to ITF through their employer form SPE
HISTORY OF THE ARAC
The African Regional Aquaculture centre (ARAC) was
established in 1960 under the sponsorship of Africa-countries in accordance
with recommendation of the first Regional workshop on Agriculture planning in
Africa help at Accra Ghana on February 1975.

Various unit in African Regional
aquaculture centre (ARAC) and their function.
1. Integrated
unit: this unit deals in the
integrated system of aquaculture which is practiced to use the waste gotten
from livestock as manure for crops and fertilizer to fertilized ponds. There
are different sections in this unit such as snailary section, arable section,
and piggery section
2. Hatchery unit: this
unit is for artificial breeding, hatching and rearing through the early life
stages of finfish and shell fish in particular. it is to support the
aquaculture industry before they are transferred to on growing systems example
pond to reach harvest size.
3. Macrobrachium
Unit- This unit deals with the culture of prawns. There are two species of
prawn produce in ARAC.
4. Feed mill unit: This unit deals
with the formulation and production of both fish feed and live stock feed using
the right ingredient in the right proportion.
5. Buguma (Brackish water station): This unit
deals with brackish water fishers and research of mangrove and aquatic plant
found in brackish water environment. They also culture tilapia.
6. Tilapia unit: this is known as family
testing unit. Here different species of tilapia are cultured. This unit is
mostly used for research purposes. Here tilapia is subjected to test before
stocking or selling them to farmers. The kinds of test they undergo include
feeding habit, growth rate and genetics
