RESEARCH METHODOLOGY OF MARITAL INSTABILITY IN ENUGU - NIGERIA



AREA OF STUDY
The study was carried out in Akpawfu, which is in Nkanu-East Local Government Area, Enugu State.
Akpawfu Town comprises the following main villages namely: Isiagu, Ajameagu, Obinagu, Ajameulo, Ogbovu, Obodo-Chukwu and Obodo-Uvuru.
The major occupation of Akpawfu Tow» is farming. They also engage in small-scale business like, fashion designing, hairdressing, barbing, and shop keeping.


POPULATION OF STUDY
The population of the study based on 1991 census is six thousand four hundred and five (6405). Males are three thousand and ten (3010), females are three thousand three hundred and ninety five (3395) (Source: National Population Commission, Enugu).

SAMPLE SIZE
A sample size of one hundred and sixty (160) respondents was used for this study. This comprises eighty males and eighty females.

SAMPLING TECHNIQUES
Multi stage sampling techniques was used in this study. Firstly, the researcher clustered the town into seven (7) based on the seven (7)'villages that constituted the study area. After that, four (4) villages were randomly selected from the seven clusters. The researcher achieved this by making a list of the seven villages, they were written on pieces of papers and wrapped. The researcher closed his eyes and picked four pieces of paper. When the pieces of papers were unfolded, Ajemulo, Ogbovu, Obinagu and Ajameagu were selected.
Thirdly, the researcher discovered that the four villages selected were arranged in houses and he decided to distribute forty- (40) questionnaire in each of the villages selected. This was done by distributing a questionnaire at the interval of every third (3rd)  house.  This was done until one hundred and sixty (160) respondents were selected.

INSTRUMENT FOR DATA COLLECTION
The instrument for data collection was questionnaire. The questionnaire contains a list of questions relating to the aims of
the study and the research questions. The questionnaire was divided into two sections.                                                                   
Section A: contains the personal data of the respondents while
Section B: contains the substantive issues.

DATA COLLECTION METHOD
The researcher went to the study area and distributed the questionnaire at the interval of every third (3rd) house. After the distribution, the researcher went back in every two, two days to collect back the questionnaire. In the course of this, those who cannot read or write were helped to read out the questions and fill the option they selected by the researcher. These activities took the period of two (2) weeks to be completed. The time used for the distribution and collection of the questionnaire was morning and evening. That was the time people have not gone out for work and the time they must have returned respectively. The activities were done during the raining season. The questionnaire were distributed until one hundred and sixty respondents were covered.

METHOD OF DATA ANALYSIS
The data was analyzed using frequency tables and simple percentages (%). In this way, the responses of the respondents were organized in such a way that their percentage rating were found and the relationship between variables determined.
