METHODOLOGY/ ANAYSIS OF STUDY
This section tries to review various ways
in which data is gathered and the way it is analyzed to suite and achieve the
purpose of the study.
3.1 data collection
To
put –up this seminar report together, I sourced for data via the following:
3.1.1 QUESTIONAIRE
This study adopted descriptive survey research design (i.e. Use of questionnaire)
to gather the subscribes perceptions of the effect of telecommunication on Nigeria economy
and its implication for the communication industry. The research was drawn on GSM
subscribers whom were comprised of policemen, teachers, students, the unemployed
graduates, itinerant traders and the drivers as the target population. The
sample comprise of 200 respondents randomly
selected from ten rural communities of Ebonyi State Nigeria. Their age range from 20-50 years. The
questionnaires used comprised of two sections. The first section required the respondent’s
bio- data information such as age,
sex, and years of using GSM etc while second section contains response items. The second section was
further divided into four parts; part1 contains items on GSM and Rural Economy,
part2 contains items on GSM and unemployment, part3 contains items on GSM and
crime reduction while part4 contains items on GSM and time management. Each part contains five questions each making
it a total 20 question in all. Response of the items range from strongly Agree to strongly Disagree. The
questionnaire was administered to the respondents in their various communities using
their town halls as the venue of administration. All the respondents in each of
the 10 selected communities were initiated of the data of the administration. With
the supp ort of my friends who are also researchers, the administration was able
to be completed in 5days. Data collected was analysed using chi-square
statistics

TABLE3
CRIME AND USE OF GSM
Significant
at 0.05 (xo obs 64.9, xo cri7 . 21.0 df, 12, p.o.05) The result in table3 above
of xo crit 21.0 at 0.05 significant levels and
12 degree of freedom. The result indicates a significant relationship
implying that the introduction GSM in
Nigeria has actually reduced the rate
of crime especially in rural area where
crime can now be reported promptly but for the purpose of this report, 1 further
carried out my investigation to actually ascertain whether this
telecommunication of a thing aids in combating crime in Nigera. From the interview
I had from different persons, I realized that people have negative opinions
contrary to result above (see section 3.2)
3.2 INTERVIEW
To get in-depth and comprehensive
information about the research, I used interview method of data collection. I
discussed on- one to different individuals from different walks of life. This
is to enable me take a concrete decision about the research I used Abakaliki
metropolis of Ebonyi State Nigeria (presco campus of EBSU)
precisely. I used some of the items used in table 3of the querstionaire part. Below
are the excerpts from two students out
of numerous interviews I had.
First student
ME: My name is Onwe Emaka, please may I
know you?
RRESPONDENT: My name is
Eweogu Obinna N. a student of Ebonyi State University Abakaliki presco campus. I
am a 200 level medical laboratory student.
1. ME:
OK, Obinna, GSM as a telecom medium has increased the rate of crime in Nigeria, what
do you have to say?
RESPONDENT: Yes, it
does, one day I was traveling to my
village and at the park, I boarded a bus with one guy who sat beside me.
On our way home, he picked his cell
phone and call one of his colleagues and told them that we are on our way. Unknowingly
to us that the guy is an armed robber, when we got to where his colleagues
were, they quietly stopped our vehicle and robbed all of us in that car.
ME: So without phone, they wouldn’t have
robbed you that day?
RESPONDENT: No, they
wouldn’t because there is no means the informant could have informed them that
we are coming. So in such case, GSM encourages crime
2. ME: GSM
encouraged dishonesty among Nigeria?
RESPONDENT: Yes, this
is purely ture, it has happened to me.
ME: HOW?
RESPONDENT: One day, I
was inside my room watching movie and my mum called me and asked me where I
was, I simply and comfortably told her that I was in the lecture hall learning where
as I was in my house watching movie that
day. So, is that not pure dishonesty?
3. ME:
Introduction
of GSM had dramatically increased fraudulent activities in Nigeria?
RESPONDENTS: OK, One day
we are in the class and one of my friends by name EBUKA asked me to give him my phone which I did only for me to discover later
that he has transferred all my credit to his own phone that is exactly fraud
SECOND STUDENT
ME: Hello, my name is Emeka Onwe I am
here to interview you on the effects of telecommunication on Nigerian economy, so
tell me about yourself.
Respondent: ok, I am by
name, Iteshi Oluchi, a student of Applied Biology, 200 levels here in presco
campus.
ME: alright, only GSM has increased the rate
of crime in Nigeria.
Do you agree to this?
RESPONDENTS: OK, let’s
use Bankers as an example. When some rich men go to the bank to withdraw huge
amount of money say N2.5m, it is only
the banker who pays this money to the man that knows what is happing and
may call some armed roobers to come and hault the man on the way and snatch his
money. So if not for the GSM, such things cannot happen. In short, it
encourages crime.
ME: GSM encourages dishonesty in Nigeria?
RESPONDENTS: Yes, this
one always happens just as we are here now, someone might call me and ask me
where I am and if I don’t want the person to come to my house and meet me, I
will tell him that I am in the village. Is that not dishonest?
ME: The use of GSM assists in reporting criminals
to law enforcement agents,?
RESPONDENTS: On yes,
take for instance, if armed robbers are operating here, my negihbous who notice
earlier can easily pick0up their phones and call the nearby polic without the
time wasting to the police station similar interview were carried on some
lecturers civi-sevants, politicatls etc and similar respondents as the two
above we obtained. So from the critical analysis of the data collected, the use
of GSM increased the rate of crime in Nigeria and hence should device a
means to combat such.
