STRATEGIES FOR IMPROVING THE HEALTH STATUS OF FAMILIES


Health is not just absence of disease but a state of physical, mental, social, financial, psychological and spiritual well being.
The above is a summary of freedom from family and reproduction health problems as earlier mentioned.
The following are some of the steps to the freedom: they all give rise to a health care system that is:
     a.       -        promotive
               -        preventive
               -        curative
               -        rehabilitative
                   Characterized by surveillance/follow up.

d.                 Collaborative
1.  -        Genetic counseling
     -        Nutrition education
     -        Marriage counseling
     -        Vocational education
     -        Community mobilization
     -        Encouragement of establishment of cooperative and credit societies
     -        Discouragement of harmful cultural practices
     -        Advocacy for governmental and non-governmental presence and     
                  participation in health matters.
2.     Promotion of food supply and proper nutrition
3.     Adequate supply of safe water and basic sanitation and environmental care.
4.     Maternal and child health care including family planning
5.     Immunization against infectious disease
6.     Prevention and control of locally endemic diseases
7.     Appropriate treatment of common disease and injuries
8.     Provision of essential drugs
9.     Integrations of mental health into primary health care systems.

  • Ø Lack of continuity of governmental projects, programmes and policies
  • Ø Victimization of members of opposing political parties
  • Ø Ignorance and refusals to learn attitude of government officials

  • Ø Frivolous change in government policies
  • Ø Mismanagement of existing resources
  • Ø Wrong priorities
  • Ø Refusal to tap or ignorance of the national potentials both human and material resources
  • Ø High level of illiteracy
  • Ø Adherence to believes and traditions
  • Ø Adherence to customs and norms
  • Ø Shortage of man power
  • Ø Money carrying culture and lack of investment and maintenance culture
