  2. You may use any of the ordinary hand tools but the use of glue, glass-paper, files, rasps and scrapers is not allowed.
  3. Any dimensions which are omitted from the drawing are left to your own discretion.
  4. If you make any mistake, work as near to the drawing as possible.  Additional materials will not be supplied.
  5. Print your name and index number clearly on each piece of wood and assemble your work before handing it to the Supervisor.

Observation

  1. Candidates were expected to construct a model panel door carrying out the following activities:
  2. Haunch mortise and tennon: Most of the candidates were unable to make the joints satisfactorily.
  3. Bridle joint: Some of the candidates were able to make this joint.
  4.  Grooving: Some of the candidates were unable to cut the groove, correctly.
  5. Rebating panel: Many of the candidates performed poorly in this activity
  6. Beveling panels: Most of the candidates performed well in this area.
  7. Finishing: Most of the candidates could not complete the project within the given time, hence the finishing was poorly done.

Wood Work Expo 2017/2018 | Verified Past Questions and Answers (OBJ & Theory)

The standard of the paper was reported to be okay and compare favourably with those of previous years.  The question was clear and free of any form of ambiguity. The marking scheme was prepared adequately.  However, candidates’ performance was poorer than the previous years

Candidates' Weakness

Some of the candidates were unable to:

  1. use the appropriate tools and equipment;
  2. interpret the working drawing appropriately;
  3. prepare the test item to the given specification.

SUGGESTED REMEDIES

To overcome these weaknesses, candidates are hereby advised to:

  1. work harder, mostly on the identified weak areas;
  2. visit the workshop regularly;
  3. learn how to interpret working drawing;
  4. learn to use the appropriate tools and equipment.

Candidates' Strength

Candidates who attempted the question were able to interpret the working drawing and were able to cut the joints appropriately.

Question 2

  1. List four hand tools used in wood turning.
  2. State the main use of a dovetail tee halving joint.
  3. List four sources of capital opened to a woodcarving sole proprietor.

Observation

Four hand tools for wood turning:

  • -           rule;
  • -           straight edge;
  • -           pencil;
  • -           calipers;
  • -           pair of dividers;
  • -           scrapers – full round, doomed, square-end;
  • -           wing compass;
  • -           gouges – roughing-out, bowl, spindle;
  • -           chisels – round-nose, skew, pairing, spear-point;
  • -           flat/facing, parting tool;
  • -           try square;
  • -           screwdriver;
  • -           spanner;
  • -           mallet;
  • -           hammer;
  • -           hand drill.

Main use of dovetail tee halving joint: dovetail tee halving joint is used for joining the ends of cross rails in frame-like construction where an outside strain occurs.

Four sources of capital for a woodcarving sole proprietor

  1. personal saving;
  2. bank loans;
  3. soft loans;
  4. gifts;
  5. inheritance;
  6. thrifts/Cooperatives.

Question 3

  1. Explain why plastic laminates are not usually bonded to a solid wood background.
  2. Name two timber defects that are used to an advantage in woodwork.
  3. Sketch a raised head screw and label any two parts.

Observation

Most candidates were able to sketch a screw and also state defects in timber.  However, the candidates who attempted the question could not give the appropriate response to the question.

The expected response is as given below:

Solid wood continually works and this causes instability in the dimensions of a work piece. This continuous movement will cause stress if plastic laminate which is more stable is placed on it.  The plastic laminate may crack or even break.
            (b)       -           Burr
                        -           Interlocked grain
                        -           Live knot
                        -           Spike knot.

General Comments

The standard of the paper compared favourably with the previous years.
However, the performance was poorer than the previous years.

Candidates' Weakness

The following weaknesses were observed from candidates’ drawing:

            -           Poor draughtsmanship.

            -           Failure in showing cutting plane.
            -           Use of straight edge instead of freehand.
            -           Repetition of the same design instead of two different designs.

To overcome these weaknesses, candidates should be given design and drawing assignments that will test these parameters.

Candidates' Strength

Candidates have improved on choice of pencil and lettering.
