This introductory chapter clearly stated the
misconceptions, the doubt and the argument of different individuals about what
the course “Mass Communication” is all about and the
best faculty it should fall under or domiciled.
Due to the above controversies, the
attention of both the Nigerian University Commission [NUC] and the National
Board for Technical Education {NBTE} was attracted and a very strong
recommendation was made recently in {2005} that Mass Communication department
should be domiciled under the faculty of social sciences.
That is because in
the view, mass communication is more of social science than art or any other
broad area of study.
However, the NUC was equally
optimistic that with time, Nigeria will join the current global trend on the
location of the department of mass communication not under faculty but a school
or collage with the most popular nomenclature usually school of communication
under which we now have full-fledged department of mass communication,
marketing, communication etc.
This chapter equally emphasized on
many faces of mass communication through which a graduate of mass communication
can earn a living that actually made the course “One course, many
profession” include but not limited to
the following:
1) Marketing occupation;
2) Marketing communications;
3) Public relations;
