RESEARCH METHOD FOR ENHANCING STUDENT PERFORMANCE IN CLOTHING AND TEXTILES



CHAPTER THREE
RESEARCH METHOD
Research Design         
            The study adopts an ex-post facto research design and descriptive survey research. Ex-post factor” means” after the fact or event.
            Onwumere (2009) stated that ex-post-facto research is a type of research which aims at determining the relationship between one variable and another, in which the variables involved are not manipulated by the researcher.

            Ezejelue, Ogwo and Nkamnebe (2008) defined desceripture survey research as a systematic method of gathering information from the respondents for the purpose of predicting from the predicting interpreting and explaining some aspects of the behaviour of the sample of a population.

Area of the Study                                         
            The area of the study is Izzi Local Government Area of Ebonyi State. Izzi Local Government Area is located in Ebonyi North Government Area in the east, Abakaliki Local Government Area in the South, Benue State is North and Cross River State in the West.
            The population of the study will consists of all 256 Home Economics students enrolled in three public secondary schools in Izzi Local Government Area of Ebonyi State during the 2011/2012 academic session.
            The three secondary schools are Holy child secondary school, Sharon, station vocational secondary school. Ndiogbu and Queens Collage Nidezoke. The entire population in 256  60, 120 and 76 students.

Sample and Sampling Technique 
A simple random sampling technique will be used to select 30% of Home-Economics students in each of the three secondary school.
The sample of the respondents will give a total of 75, with 36 and 23 students Sharon 18, station vocational secondary school Ndiogbu 36 and Queens Collage Ndiezeoke 23 students.

Instrument of Data Collection
            The instrument for data collection will be a research developed questionnaire tilled clothing and textiles strategies scale (CTSS)”. CTSS will be a item questionnaire designed to show how students respond to the strategies for enhancing their performance in clothing and textiles. The instrument is structured on a 4-point likert scale of very great extent (VGE), great extent (GE) very low extent (VLE) and low extent (LE) for each of the item in the questionnaire.
Validation of Instrument          
            The instrument will be validated by three lectures from Home Economics Department of Ebonyi State University based on their advice, some of the items in the instrument will be modified and corrected. When the instrument is adjudged to be valid and reliable, it shows that, it is consistent in measurement.

Method of Data Collection     
            The researcher will personally administer the questionnaire on the respondents. Copies of the completed questionnaire distributed will be collected from the respondents in each of the three schools.

Method of Data Analysis   
The mean and standard deviation will be used to analyze the data collected.  
To enhance computation, the options in the research question will be weighted on the 4-point Likert rating scale of VGE- 4points, GE-3 points, LE -2points and VLE-1point.
The mid-point for the scale will be 2.5. Hence, only means score of 2.5 and above will be accepted as indications of great extent of the strategies, while means scores below 2.5 will be regarded as indications of low extent of the strategies to enhance students performance in clothing and textiles in secondary schools in Ebonyi State.
Arubayi and Obunadike (2011), Arubayi (2009) and Arubayi (2010) used similar approach in their analysis of related study.
