TRUANCY AND ITS CONSEQUENCES ON THE ACADEMIC PERFORMANCES OF SECONDARY SCHOOL STUDENTS IN OHAUKWU LOCAL GOVERNMENT AREA OF EBONYI STATE

ABSTRACT
The effects of truancy among secondary school students in Ohaukwu Local Government Area of Ebonyi State on the students, the school authority, and the society at large with a view to knowing how to tackle it necessitated this research work. Four research questions have been formulated to guide this study. Random sampling method was used and it covered 9 selected secondary
schools, 3000 (three thousand) students and 200 (two hundred) teachers. These numbers therefore represent their counterpart from their schools and other schools in Ohaukwu Local Government Area of Ebonyi State. From the raw views got through the questionnaire and the analysis made, it was found that truancy is not just a serious educational problem, but also a serious social one. It does not just affect those students who indulge in them but also affects those students who do not. It also increases crime in the society and leads to economic waste. Since it affects virtually everyone directly or indirectly, recommendations have been made for a concerted effort by all to reduce it to the lowest level.
