ABSTRACT
The study aimed at finding the causes of poor performance in Senior Secondary School Certificate Examination (SSCE), in Onicha Local Government Area of Ebonyi State. The main purpose of this study is to examine the root causes of poor performance of students in SSCE. Six research questions were raised to guide the study. The research design used in this study is a descriptive survey design. The population for the study consists of all the fourteen (14) registered secondary school which has 2,539 students. During this research, sample size of 175 students was used. The instrument for data collection is a questionnaire survey which was validated by three experts. The data collected was filled by the respondents which consisted of parents, teachers and students from different background.   The researcher used mean (X) and frequencies to analyze the data. The following findings were made: examination malpractices, shortage of qualified teachers, government inability to provide basic laboratory equipment, dwindling economy, instructional method, and indiscipline in our secondary school. In order to solve the existing problems in our educational system, the study gave some recommendations which if wisely applied will lead to excellent performance in SSCE, this include: provision of conducive learning environment for student and teachers by providing basic materials needed for teaching and learning enlightenment campaign against examination malpractices would also go a long way to increase discipline.
